A former official from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned of serious consequences that could result from the United States using a nuclear weapon against Iran, pointing to the possibility of terrorist and cyberattacks on U.S. soil targeting critical infrastructure, the financial system, and power grids.
Chris Swecker, who spent 24 years with the FBI, told the Daily Mail that any U.S. nuclear strike against Iran could raise the threat level posed by Hezbollah cells within the United States, warning of potential attacks on nuclear power plants and major energy facilities.
He added that the “most realistic” response could involve existing Hezbollah cells within the United States carrying out terrorist attacks, considering them capable of targeting U.S. territory.
The former official noted that the threat is not limited to field operations but also includes cyber operations that could target the U.S. financial system or cause power outages across wide cities and regions.
He stated that disrupting the financial system or targeting energy infrastructure could lead to panic, even without the use of nuclear weapons, and also warned of the possibility of attacks on undersea communication cables.
These warnings come amid growing fears of an escalating confrontation between Washington and Tehran, as President Donald Trump holds meetings with his National Security team to discuss the future of military operations against Iran, coinciding with stalled peace talks.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media have broadcast awareness videos since around October 26, warning residents of the possibility of populated areas being hit by nuclear strikes or contaminated by radiation from a nuclear explosion.
These developments coincided with reports that Trump is reconsidering his stance on using nuclear weapons in the confrontation with Iran.
In this context, John Kiriacou, a former official at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), said the president is considering using a tactical nuclear weapon against the Mount of the Axe, aiming to destroy facilities located deep within the mountain.
Kiriacou, during an interview on the “Piers Morgan Uncensored” program, quoted sources he said were connected to the White House as stating that the U.S. president is considering this option.
American talk show host Tucker Carlson also announced on November 2 that a U.S. nuclear strike against Iran could be imminent.
