Sky News – The French bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa announced that it fell victim to a sophisticated cyberattack that enabled hackers to carry out fraudulent transactions worth nearly 100 million euros. The bank confirmed that customers’ accounts were not affected by the breach, while the Paris public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the incident.
According to the news agency AFP, the bank explained that the attackers managed to transfer funds from one of its accounts to other banks, before converting the money into cryptocurrencies using specialized platforms.
The bank affirmed that the attack had been contained and that customers had not incurred any losses, noting that part of the transferred funds had been frozen while efforts continued to recover the remaining amounts.
The bank ruled out that the transfers resulted from human error, insisting they were the product of a “sophisticated external attack.”
It did not disclose details of the method used by the hackers to carry out the breach, nor the identity of any parties potentially involved.
In this context, the Paris public prosecutor’s office told AFP that it had opened an investigation into the attack, without providing further details.
The French newspaper Le Télégramme had previously reported that 118 million euros had been stolen, but the bank did not confirm this figure, limiting itself to stating that the losses from the attack do not threaten the financial stability or resilience of the banking group.
The attack comes as Crédit Mutuel Arkéa reported net profits of 230 million euros during the first half of 2026.
