Tokyo – Reuters – Kozo Tashima, honorary president of the Japan Football Association, announced on Thursday that he will run for the presidency of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) in the elections scheduled for March next year.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is seeking a new term, faces opposition following his failed attempt last July to introduce private-sector investors into a new commercial entity affiliated with the international federation, which would hold rights linked to competitions including the World Cup.
Tashima told the local newspaper Sports Nippon: “I am grateful that I can announce this decision with the full support of the Japan Football Association.”
He added: “This is not about winning or losing, but about conveying the values of integrity and transparency established by Japanese football to the world. What FIFA needs now are these values, which we have upheld. I have decided to run in order to direct this appeal to the world.”
