Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said, “We will end the war” with Iran, noting that there is support from some Republicans in the Senate.
Schumer said during a press conference at the headquarters of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in Washington, D.C., “We will end the war. We already have some Republicans who have joined us in ending the war, and the Founding Fathers made control of spending one of the means to deter a president from waging war without the approval of the American people.”
President Donald Trump had told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday evening that the war was partly responsible for the significant losses suffered by Republicans in the midterm elections. However, he insisted that he does not regret his decision to launch the war earlier this year.
In a telephone interview with the U.S. newspaper, Trump responded to a question about whether the war had contributed to Republicans’ poor performance in the elections, saying, “Iran was part of that.”
In June, four Republican senators voted alongside Democrats in support of a resolution regarding war powers, calling for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran, which had begun without formal congressional authorization for the use of military force.
