Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview conducted yesterday, Wednesday, that he hopes the gains achieved by Democrats in the U.S. midterm elections will lead to increased support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
He noted that he hopes the changes resulting from Democratic control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate next year will be in Kyiv’s favor.
He added, “I am also grateful to the Republicans, but Democrats speak more clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing assistance to it.”
He continued, “They are talking about renewing relations between the United States and Europe. Therefore, there is hope that a balance of power will be formed and that we will receive more support.”
Zelenskyy clarified that receiving more U.S. aid could have an impact on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelenskyy has made significant efforts to strengthen relations with U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly after a tense meeting in the Oval Office in February 2025, when the Ukrainian president was accused of being “ungrateful” for U.S. aid.
In recent weeks, Trump has taken several steps perceived as favoring Russia, including an agreement to import Russian diesel fuel and easing of sanctions.
However, U.S.-led trilateral talks with Ukraine and Russia are scheduled to resume next week after a hiatus of several months.
