Madrid, AFP - Spanish football club Real Madrid is set to appoint retired tennis star Rafael Nadal as a member of its board of directors.

Nadal, 40, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, has been an honorary member of the club since 2011 and maintains a close relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez.

In a statement issued by the club: “For Real Madrid and all its fans, it is a great source of pride that a figure of his sporting and human stature, considered a symbol of Spanish and world sport, joins our board of directors to contribute through this role to the present and future of our club.”

Club members are expected to approve Nadal’s appointment at the general assembly scheduled for November 21.

In 2023, Nadal expressed his desire to one day become president of Real Madrid, although he voiced doubts about his suitability for the position.

Ahead of the club’s elections held this year, Nadal denied reports suggesting he might run for the post, which Pérez won in June’s election, defeating his rival Enrique Riquelme.
