Armed with nuclear weapons, North Korea conducted a series of weapons tests in recent days amid escalating tensions with Seoul following the detonation of a landmine along their heavily fortified border.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said in a brief statement that “North Korea launched an unspecified projectile toward the East Sea,” referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.
A joint investigation by Seoul and the United Nations recently concluded that North Korea planted the landmines that exploded in the demilitarized zone more than a year ago, a claim Pyongyang has denied.
The launch comes a day after North Korea conducted a test of a strategic cruise missile, following a separate test of cluster munition warheads at the end of last week.
Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, had earlier on Wednesday warned that her country would respond with force to Washington’s “persistent hostile policy” toward Pyongyang.
