The Competitions and Technical Committees of the Kuwait Football Association are holding meetings in the coming days to discuss the repercussions of the Asian Cup final tournament’s postponement. Originally scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027, the tournament has been rescheduled to December 2027 and January 2028 due to “developments in the region,” according to an announcement by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Tuesday.

In a statement, the AFC said: “The Asian Cup Organizing Committee has agreed to reschedule the continental national team tournament in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including significant logistical complexities and travel disruptions.”

The postponement of the continental tournament is expected to bring major changes to the domestic competition calendar, granting the Kuwait Football Association considerable flexibility to reprogram fixtures more comfortably. This is particularly relevant given that the break in competitions for the preparation and participation of the Kuwait national team would have lasted at least 45 days under the worst-case scenario.

On the other hand, the Technical Committee is awaiting the modifications the continental body will make to the schedule for the 2030 World Cup and 2032 Asian Cup qualifiers. These qualifiers were originally set to begin with preliminary rounds next March, with the second round involving 36 national teams, including Kuwait (“The Blues”), scheduled between September 2027 and March 2028.

The committee is expected to meet with the national team’s coach, Portuguese manager Hélio Sousa, to discuss the future preparation of “The Blues” for the upcoming phase, although this will largely depend on the new dates for the World Cup qualifiers.

The AFC has set December 15 next year as the date for the draw of the second round of the World Cup qualifiers, the results of which are linked to the 2032 Asian Cup. Teams that advance from the second round to the third round will simultaneously secure direct qualification for the 2032 Asian Cup finals (a total of 18 teams). Meanwhile, teams eliminated early will move on to compete in the newly launched AFC Nations League, scheduled for the 2028-2029 season.

Previously, several local clubs intended to organize external training camps for their squads during the domestic league break in January, particularly those with fewer players in the national team. However, the Asian Cup postponement and the subsequent reprogramming of competitions will force them to cancel these plans.

At the continental level, the decision to postpone the Asian Cup will impact the fate of several national team coaches, including that of Kuwait, whose manager Sousa’s contract expires in July 2027, months before the tournament.

According to media reports, several Asian federations have been compelled to review their coaches’ contracts. The original February 2027 end date for the tournament had served as a milestone for evaluating or replacing technical staff in countries including Saudi Arabia, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Qatar, Iraq, Vietnam, and Jordan. Additionally, training camps that were planned to be held shortly before the tournament, even if for just a few days, will be canceled.
