London, AFP – Michael Carrick said he expects to continue managing Manchester United in their upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Italian side Roma next Tuesday, despite a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the ninth round of the English Premier League, marking the club’s ninth consecutive match without a win.
Carrick was given another chance to lead United after a heavy 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth last week, when many had anticipated the dismissal of the former English midfielder.
Manchester United looked much better in the first half at Stamford Bridge, but paid the price for their lack of attacking efficiency after squandering several chances to take the lead.
When asked by TNT Sports whether he expected to remain in charge for the Roma match, Carrick replied: “Yes.”
He added: “We have to move forward. We need to take with us the things that worked, draw some confidence and belief from that, along with many positive aspects, especially in the first half.”
Carrick continued: “After we were in a very good position during the first half, I don’t think the two halves differed much in certain aspects.” He added: “I believe the way the team played, the quality of the football, and our approach in the first half are all things that certainly give us encouragement. We must hold on to that.”
United are now at risk of failing to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League after suffering two defeats in their first three matches in the competition, leaving them in 20th place in the 36-team standings.
