This came in a statement delivered by Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ruwaili, on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, during a General Assembly session on the use of the veto, as part of the work of its 81st session.
The statement noted that the General Assembly’s adoption of Resolution 76/262 in 2022 constituted an important step toward strengthening its role in discussing the use of the “veto.”
The GCC states emphasized that the use of the veto, which prevented the adoption of a draft resolution concerning the security of waterways and freedom of international navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, underscores the need to enhance dialogue and bring countries’ viewpoints closer together.
