The United States has dismissed its top military planning official, according to The Atlantic magazine, in a sudden move that appears to coincide with President Donald Trump’s preparations to resume large-scale strikes on Iran.
The magazine, citing anonymous Department of Defense officials, reported that Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia was dismissed this week from his post as Director for Strategy, Plans, and Policies on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
If confirmed, Sylvia’s dismissal would be part of a series of departures by senior military officials since Trump’s return to power.
Last month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States had reduced the number of its generals and admirals by 20 percent, a step he clarified was aimed at “accountability.”
He noted that the cuts targeted officers who had not supported his efforts to refocus the military on fighting wars rather than pursuing the “woke ideology” policies of previous administrations, referring to diversity and equality initiatives, and described the reductions as an “achievement.”
The Atlantic added that no reason was given for Sylvia’s dismissal and no successor has been named.
Sylvia previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division, the U.S. Army’s air assault division, and led a unit in Iraq.
