Under the leadership of the Department of Defense, the United States is moving to expand its arsenal of low-cost attack drones by ordering 60,000 drones from nine companies, as part of a plan to enhance military capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign components.
According to Defence Blog, the new batch follows field tests in Colorado, which included drones designed to strike targets at distances of up to 15 kilometers, as well as others intended for combat in confined spaces, including buildings.
The procurement orders are evenly split between the two categories, with 30,000 drones for each. The allocation per company is as follows: Perennial Autonomy receives 8,000 drones; Neros receives 8,000 drones for the deep-strike category and 6,000 for close-quarters combat; and Hyperscale, a U.S. firm, receives 7,000 drones.
The Department of Defense also plans to allocate approximately $1.1 billion to the program across its four phases, aiming to provide large quantities of low-cost drones and strengthen its presence in upcoming military operations.
