Substitutes Siniša Mihaljević and Mika Godts scored two brilliant goals in the second half to propel their team, Paris Saint-Germain, to the top of the French Ligue 1 after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over visitors Olympique Lyonnais on Monday.
The win lifted PSG’s tally to 17 points from eight matches, putting them one point clear of second-placed Stade Rennais, while Lyon remained fifth with 14 points after squandering a chance to lead the league.
The match took place on the same night as the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, which honors the world’s best player. PSG set a record by having 10 of its players nominated for various awards.
Mihaljević opened the scoring 18 minutes from time, receiving a pass from Godts on the edge of the penalty area, controlling the ball, and firing a powerful shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Godts sealed the three points with his first goal for the club since joining from Ajax Amsterdam earlier this season. He received a long pass and unleashed a strong strike from the edge of the box to find the net in the 84th minute.
PSG fans chanted the name of Georgian forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before the match, as he is currently undergoing surgery in Qatar to treat a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
