Syrian authorities announced the death of five civilians in Jordanian air strikes on the country’s south on Monday evening. The Jordanian army said the strikes “targeted terrorist groups” in response to a deadly attack on a church in Karak.
The official Syrian news agency, SANA, quoted Deraa Health Director Khaled Al-Omian as saying that “five civilian victims, including women and children,” were killed in Jordanian air strikes on several sites in the governorate.
In an official statement carried by SANA, the Syrian government announced that “competent authorities are closely following developments on the ground in southern Syria following air strikes carried out by the Jordanian Air Force earlier, which resulted in martyrs and wounded, including civilians and children, and that this military operation was not coordinated in advance with the Syrian side.”
The Syrian government affirmed its solidarity with affected Syrian families and expressed full sympathy for their loss, stating that “competent authorities have launched thorough investigations to ascertain all circumstances surrounding this targeting, while simultaneously opening ongoing and open communication channels with our brothers in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to discuss the situation and emphasize the importance of joint field and security coordination for any steps concerning border areas, in order to preserve the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and safeguard the security and stability of the two brotherly countries.”
