London, AFP – Storm Boiloo caused power outages for tens of thousands of homes in northern Britain as strong winds and heavy rain battered the region, also disrupting transport services.
Boiloo is the second named storm in Britain this season, shortly after Storm Austin, which brought strong winds to the country’s southern areas on Friday.
The National Grid, the body representing the sector, reported that more than 82,000 properties remained without electricity as of 08:00 GMT.
A wind warning at the highest level was in effect in Scotland, where fallen trees, downed cables, and infrastructure damage led to the closure of roads and rail lines.
The UK Met Office said wind speeds peaked at 84 mph (135 km/h) in Argyll and Bute, western Scotland.
Yellow rain warnings were also issued in Scotland and northern England, with some areas expected to receive up to 80 mm of rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding.
Northern Ireland was also affected by the storm, with several flights departing from Belfast cancelled. Ferry services across the Irish Sea between Belfast and northwest England were also suspended.
The UK Met Office warned that Storm Boiloo poses a threat to life due to flying debris and rough seas, urging residents to stay indoors as much as possible.
