Osama Al-Abdulrahim, Secretary-General of Kuwait’s Progressive Movement, called for “vivid discussions on the draft Cooperative Societies Law before its approval, and for adherence to the seven international democratic principles of the cooperative movement.”
Al-Abdulrahim stated: “While we appreciate the positive role of the cooperative sector, we have criticized the deviations that this sector has witnessed, and we have called for correcting these deviations and developing the cooperative sector by adhering to internationally established principles of the cooperative movement, and subjecting it to oversight and transparency.”
He noted that the Movement had previously expressed its observations on February 5, 2025, regarding the suspension of elections for the boards of directors of cooperative societies until the current Cooperative Societies Law is amended or a new law is issued. He pointed to reports indicating that the new draft law proposes that boards of directors consist of only three members elected by the general assemblies, with four members appointed, meaning that appointed members would constitute the majority.
He renewed his call “for the necessity of opening the floor to lively discussions on the draft law before its issuance, involving stakeholders, experts, experienced individuals, and workers in the cooperative sector, as well as civil society organizations, while ensuring that their observations are taken into account.”
