London, KUNA – Britain has announced the establishment of the world’s first artificial intelligence-based biosafety laboratory, aimed at enhancing the United Kingdom’s capacity to counter any type of biological threat.
In a statement, the British Cabinet confirmed that “the laboratory will receive initial funding of £300 million, including £100 million from the government and £200 million from companies Owen AI and Anthropic.”
It noted that “advances in artificial intelligence offer unprecedented opportunities for scientific discoveries, but they also change the nature of biological risks, as AI can accelerate research, improve understanding of diseases, and support the discovery and development of new countermeasures.”
The statement added that “advanced AI systems are giving rise to new biological risks capable of undermining the effectiveness of preventive measures designed to counter harmful activities.”
It pointed out that the new laboratory, which will operate as a non-profit organization, will bring together expertise in biosafety, life sciences, and artificial intelligence to build deep research collaboration, helping to translate AI advancements into practical capabilities that enhance resilience against biological threats.
