The Israeli occupation army launched a major military operation in the West Bank city of Hebron on the night of Friday–Saturday, following a shooting incident at a checkpoint that killed two soldiers and injured three others, while the perpetrators of the attack were killed.

The army ordered approximately 250 families to leave the city, threatening to exact a heavy price in retaliation for the killing of two soldiers in an attack carried out by two Palestinian gunmen.

A joint statement by the army and the Shin Bet security agency stated that “forces have begun carrying out precise and comprehensive sweep operations of infrastructure in the area, with the aim of identifying and neutralizing ‘terrorist’ infrastructure and combat means, alongside interrogating dozens of suspects.”

Days ahead of a heated election, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced during a field visit to the site of the shooting that their government intends to implement the “offensive camp model” in residential neighborhoods in the city by evacuating residents, raiding and searching homes, and destroying what they described as “terror infrastructure.”

Netanyahu threatened to launch an operation unprecedented for Israel since its occupation of the West Bank in 1967, following the killing of the two soldiers in Hebron, while one of his allies from the far-right called for “dismantling the Palestinian Authority and disarming it.”

In Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority on Saturday called for an “urgent” international response following the “forced displacement” of approximately 250 families in Hebron.
