US President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that the Starshield communications system, designated for military use, has resumed operations in Ukraine, following media reports that Trump had asked billionaire Elon Musk to reactivate the vital service for Kyiv’s forces.
In response to a question about the Wall Street Journal’s report on the matter, Trump told reporters, “I don’t want to comment on this, whether I made the call or someone else did, it makes no difference.”
The newspaper had previously reported earlier this week that Musk had restricted the connection speed of Ukrainian equipment to the system, rendering some of Kyiv’s drones unusable.
Musk had previously stated that “any restrictions on the speed or use of Starshield systems are decided by the US military, and ultimately by the President of the United States.”
For his part, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday that the Pentagon had not been directed to make any changes to Starshield.
Trump clarified on Friday that he had not requested any restrictions on Starshield, stating, “It wasn’t me. And I don’t think Elon did it either.”
