French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Wednesday that France will hold a conference to support the Lebanese army following Israel’s legislative elections.
Speaking to journalists in the Qatari capital during a Gulf tour, Macron said, “We will also coordinate to support the Lebanese army, and France will hold a conference in the coming weeks... I believe it is pointless to do so before the Israeli elections,” scheduled for October 27.
In September, Macron met with his Lebanese counterpart Joseph Aoun and Jordanian King Abdullah II as part of a preparatory meeting to mobilize international support for the deployment of the Lebanese army across the entire Lebanese territory.
He added, “I believe that everyone today sees the untenable situation in which Lebanon finds itself, under (...) pressure and with (...) its sovereignty being undermined, and this is (...) the worst possible way to handle the Hezbollah issue.”
A conference in Paris to support the Lebanese army was originally scheduled for March 5, but its holding was postponed following the outbreak of war between Hezbollah and Israel on March 2, in the wake of US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
