Woori Bank celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of the “PULSE Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Genesis” program, marking a new milestone in the bank’s journey to strengthen its internal capabilities in continuous improvement and develop its employees’ skills. This achievement follows the participants’ completion of an applied training program in the Lean Six Sigma methodology and the execution of real development projects linked to the bank’s operational challenges and needs.
This accomplishment extends the “PULSE” initiative launched by Woori Bank, aimed at building sustainable institutional capabilities in performance improvement, operational efficiency, and problem-solving, aligning with the bank’s focus on investing in its employees and empowering them to play an active role in developing work methods and enhancing output quality.
The “Green Belt Genesis” program was designed as an applied developmental experience that goes beyond theoretical training in classrooms. Participants underwent specialized training that enabled them to apply the Lean Six Sigma methodology to real-world problems and challenges in the banking environment.
Applying the DMAIC methodology was a core graduation requirement. Participants identified challenges, measured current performance, analyzed root causes, developed appropriate improvements, and verified their impact on business operations, thereby enhancing their ability to address issues systematically using data and evidence-based approaches.
All graduates successfully completed their improvement projects, which covered various areas including enhancing customer satisfaction, risk management, waste reduction, boosting operational efficiency, improving process reliability, developing work methods, and fostering collaboration among different work teams, process owners, and support units.
In this regard, Her Excellency Al-Rashid, Head of the Human Resources and General Services Group at Woori Bank, stated: “The graduation of the first cohort of the PULSE Green Belt program represents an important step in Woori Bank’s journey to develop our employees’ capabilities and transform knowledge and training into practical application and added value for the business. Participants have demonstrated their ability to apply the Lean Six Sigma methodology to real challenges and work collaboratively with various bank teams, reflecting the importance of empowering employees and providing them with tools to develop work methods and achieve more efficient and sustainable results. Through PULSE, we continue to reinforce a culture of continuous improvement, ownership, and responsibility across all bank sectors.”
Al-Rashid added: “The program reflects Woori Bank’s approach to making employee development an integral part of the institutional improvement process, by building cadres capable of identifying development opportunities, analyzing challenges, proposing solutions, and measuring their impact systematically.”
In the same context, Layla Al-Fahad, Head of the Operations Group at Woori Bank, said: “The graduation of the first cohort marks an important transition in the PULSE initiative’s journey from the capacity-building phase to direct practical application, as participants have become able to utilize the tools and methodologies they acquired to address actual operational challenges.”
Al-Fahad added: “This methodology contributes to enhancing teams’ ability to make data-driven decisions, understand root causes of problems rather than merely addressing their symptoms, and develop more sustainable and measurable solutions.”
Furthermore, the nature of the implemented projects strengthened collaboration among various sectors and teams by bringing together employees, process owners, and support units around a unified approach based on data analysis and organized problem-solving.
With the graduation of the first cohort of Green Belt holders, NBK is building an internal network of employees capable of identifying inefficiencies, constructively reviewing existing processes, and leading improvement initiatives within their respective areas of work.
The first cohort represents the first generation of PULSE practitioners within the bank, enhancing the initiative’s ability to transition from a centralized improvement program to a daily working approach that can be applied across various sectors of the bank.
Performance, Uplift, Lean, Strategy, Execution. The initiative was established to strengthen NBK’s internal capabilities in improvement, and to unify the working methodology in the areas of quality, efficiency, and problem-solving.
The graduation of the first cohort of the “Green Belt Genesis” program marks an advanced stage in this journey, as employees move from acquiring knowledge of the methodology to directly applying it to business challenges, demonstrating the role that structured improvement methodologies can play in supporting customers, employees, and the bank’s strategic objectives.
NBK is expected to continue building on this step by developing employee capabilities, supporting practical improvement projects, and fostering a work environment that enables teams to identify development opportunities, address issues, and sustain improved performance levels in the long term.
This direction reflects the bank’s long-term commitment to investing in its human resources, raising performance standards, and embedding a culture of excellence and continuous improvement in alignment with its strategic objectives and its vision of “Owning Tomorrow.”
