Zurich – Reuters: British media reported that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) sent a letter to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), requesting answers regarding the presidency of Swiss official Gianni Infantino, as well as questions about the “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project and the “FIFA Peace Award,” with a deadline of November 2 next year.
UEFA has led calls for Infantino’s resignation since he proposed a project that was later abandoned, which included creating a company to manage the commercial interests of FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, and selling a minority stake to private-sector investors.
Infantino, 56, who will seek re-election next year, apologized to the FIFA Council last week and asked attendees to submit any questions they had about his management style in writing, so he could respond at the meeting scheduled for December 16 next year.
However, Sky Sports and other British media reported that UEFA Secretary General Theodoros Theodoridis sent a message to his counterpart at FIFA, Swedish official Matthias Grafström, requesting a swift response to 42 questions concerning 12 topics.
Theodoridis wrote: “These questions require answers now. They cannot be postponed until the next FIFA Council meeting, and future governance reforms cannot replace scrutiny and accountability for decisions already made.”
Infantino is set to run for re-election in March 2027, as the November 18 deadline for closing the nomination window approaches.
