Paris – AFP – Despite his significant danger and the outstanding level he has displayed since the start of the season with his Spanish club Barcelona, Portuguese midfielder Vitinha insisted that French champions Paris Saint-Germain, winners of the past two titles, “do not fear” Lamine Yamal.
Barcelona visit Saint-Germain tomorrow, Tuesday, in the third round of the unified group stage of the UEFA Champions League, with both teams seeking a third consecutive victory.
Dealing with Yamal is one of the key challenges in the match, but PSG’s Spanish manager, Luis Enrique, believes that “the best way to defend against Lamine Yamal is to possess the ball. That is our ideal goal, but things won’t always go that way because we know how difficult it is to play against Barcelona. However, we remain focused and alert. We must rise to the occasion as a team.”
For his part, Vitinha said: “I wouldn’t say we fear him. He is one of the best players in the world. What he does is amazing; he is an exceptional player. It is enjoyable to face this type of player, but not just him. We will first face a great team, and it is not only about Lamine.”
When asked whether this clash between the two sides could be considered an early final, Vitinha replied: “It is still early; we are in October. We know how things can change during the season. The reality in October is not the same as in March. It is always a big match, one of the best possible games between two of Europe’s top teams,” alongside German club Bayern Munich.
The Portuguese international midfielder continued: “Just like against Manchester City (4-2 in the previous round away in England), it is a big match we want to take on. Even if it is not decisive, it comes at a stage where three points could be crucial. We are eager to show our true level.”
Regarding the key to the match, Vitinha clarified: “It will be similar to last year’s game against Bayern Munich (referring to the 5-4 first-leg quarter-final victory). There will be one team pressing and another seeking to dominate possession. Initially, things will be somewhat chaotic, with continuous pressure. As time goes on, the tempo will drop, and we will see who can capitalize on that.”
