London, AFP – Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo said it is “too early” to discuss converting his loan spell at English club Liverpool into a permanent transfer, despite a promising start to his time at Anfield.

The former Barcelona captain has established himself as a regular right-back, despite preferring to play as a center-back.

Liverpool hold an option to sign the player, who will turn 28 in March next year, permanently for £47 million ($63 million).

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s home match against Spanish side Villarreal in the Champions League, Araujo said: “It is too early to talk about these matters.” He added, “I am very happy to be here, and my family is also very happy, but it is a bit early to discuss these issues.”

Araujo, who has made 10 appearances for Liverpool, is highly popular with fans and appears to have adapted quickly to the demands of the English league.

He continued: “Coming to Liverpool is not easy. There are these requirements and this responsibility. Personally, I experienced that at Barcelona.” He added, “It depends on each player’s personality and how they face this challenge. I knew that coming to the Premier League would be a new challenge, but from the moment I arrived, I had no doubt that I would have to give everything here.”

Araujo concluded: “It is not easy to be at big clubs, but that is why we came here. That is the job we have to do.”

Under Spanish manager Andoni Iraola, Liverpool sit fifth in the unified group stage of the Champions League, with two wins from two matches against Spanish side Atletico Madrid and Austrian club LASK Linz.
