Russian Foreign Minister visits Tehran today

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrives in Iran today, Monday, for his first visit since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East, as Russia seeks to play a mediating role in ending the conflict.

Lavrov, who is scheduled to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said on Sunday that Moscow’s efforts “aim to prevent the return of a large-scale war,” amid stalled talks between Tehran and Washington.

The visit comes weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin informed his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian in early October that Moscow was ready to contribute to mediation efforts.

In late September, Lavrov announced at the United Nations General Assembly that his country was prepared to work toward stability in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf region.
