Amid highly complex regional and field conditions, Palestinian factions in Cairo concluded a new round of national dialogue.
This round comes days after the factions agreed to postpone the legislative elections scheduled for November next year, reflecting a serious attempt to reorganize internal Palestinian affairs at a time when Israeli challenges are escalating and national files are becoming more complicated.
The recent dialogue rounds in Cairo were preceded by a series of preliminary meetings held in the first week of October 2026, where representatives of Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine met and reached a preliminary agreement to postpone the legislative elections.
On October 10, President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree setting September 11, 2027, as the new date for both legislative and presidential elections, justifying the decision by Israeli obstacles that prevent providing suitable conditions for free and fair elections, including restrictions on the movement of the Central Elections Commission staff in the Gaza Strip and occupied East Jerusalem, as well as the difficult security and humanitarian conditions caused by the ongoing Israeli war on the besieged Gaza Strip.
Fatah affirmed that the dialogue in Cairo was “very positive,” with the movement’s official spokesperson, Munther al-Hayek, stating that “the Palestinian cause is facing a highly dangerous phase, given the war and widespread destruction suffered by the Gaza Strip, and the continuation of violations in the West Bank.”
He stressed that “the failure of reconciliation efforts represents a catastrophe,” calling for “unifying political and security authority on the basis of one law and one weapon.”
For his part, Jibril Rajoub, head of the Fatah delegation to Cairo, revealed that the factions “agreed to move toward a comprehensive national dialogue conference,” clarifying that “Egypt will soon issue invitations to 14 Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, along with other Palestinian forces and figures.”
He added that his movement “is open to advancing the date of the legislative and presidential elections, should the factions reach common agreements during the upcoming national dialogue conference,” emphasizing that the meetings “took place in a positive atmosphere and were characterized by a degree of understanding.”
