Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called on Saturday for the parliament to convene an emergency session to obtain authorization to defend Saudi Arabia if Egypt is asked to do so.
Speaking during a ceremony marking the graduation of new cohorts of students from the military academies and colleges, el-Sisi said, “It is unreasonable to allow the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or its security and stability to be undermined.”
He added, “I know that this matter requires approval from the Egyptian parliament, and I hope they convene an emergency session to grant us this mandate if it is requested of us. I am not speaking with the intention of fighting or attacking anyone; we are speaking solely for the purpose of defense.”
