Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called on parliament today, Saturday, to convene an emergency session to obtain authorization to defend Saudi Arabia if Egypt is requested to do so.
Sisi, in a speech during a ceremony celebrating the graduation of new batches of students from the military academy and colleges, said, “It is unreasonable to allow the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or its security and stability to be undermined.”
He added, “I know that this matter requires ratification by the Egyptian Parliament, and I hope they convene in an emergency session to grant us this authorization if we are asked to do so. I am speaking not to fight or attack anyone; we are speaking only to defend.”
In another context, Sisi confirmed today, Saturday, that the end of his presidential term in 2030 is “completely settled.”
Sisi said, “The Egyptian Constitution will not be touched.. The end of my presidential term in 2030 is a matter completely settled.”
He stated that “four years ago, we were talking about preparing the academy to train and qualify cadres for the Egyptian state.. Today, the academy will have another role, which is the responsibility of preparing another generation of leaders who will bear the responsibility of leading the Egyptian state.”
Sisi continued, “Until the end of 2030, there are about 43 months remaining. We are talking about 30 months of preparation for doctoral candidates, whether from Egyptian universities or reputable foreign ones. We will establish an integrated mechanism for this, with the Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament taking responsibility for its preparation, alongside a select group of trusted thinkers and politicians, as well as the Minister of Higher Education and the Minister of Justice, so that a law can be drafted to regulate the election of those who meet the criteria I have mentioned.. They will remain at the academy for about 30 months to learn the meaning of the state, its resources, and how to preserve them.. The elite who will enter will be an opportunity for the Egyptian people to elect and choose from among them.”
Sisi was elected president of Egypt in 2014 for a four-year term, and was re-elected for a second term in 2018, before the constitution was amended to make his second term six years instead of four, enabling him to win a third term ending in 2030.
