Novak Djokovic received a wildcard invitation on Friday to compete in the Basel tennis tournament, marking his first appearance there since 2011, as part of his efforts to qualify for the season-ending championship and secure his 103rd career title. The 39-year-old Serbian enters the Swiss event following a mixed Asian swing, where he captured his seventh China Open title—a record—before suffering a surprising second-round defeat to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz at the Shanghai Masters, a tournament he has won four times, another record.
Djokovic endured a season of inconsistent results by his own high standards, having been eliminated in the first round of the US Open, his earliest exit from a Grand Slam since the 2006 Australian Open.
The decision to add Basel to his schedule came as a surprise, as Djokovic had stated after his early exit in Shanghai that he planned to participate only in the Paris Masters, scheduled for November 2–8, ahead of the season finale.
Basel offers Djokovic an opportunity to bolster his chances of making the year-end championship for a record 17th time. The Serbian currently sits 11th in the race for the Turin event and needs to finish the season in the top nine, especially with world No. 1 Jannik Sidel out until the end of 2026 due to a knee injury.
This will be Djokovic’s fourth appearance in Basel, where he previously claimed the title in 2009 by defeating Switzerland’s Roger Federer in the final.
Djokovic will join a strong field in Basel that includes Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime and Americans Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz. The 500-point event will be played on hard courts from October 26 to November 1.
