Lille – Reuters – French football club Lille announced on Saturday that it is considering legal action after its Portuguese defender Tiago Santos suffered a serious knee injury from a tackle described as “out of control and dangerous” during their Ligue 1 match against Le Havre.

The 24-year-old Santos sustained a tear to his anterior cruciate ligament and damage to the cartilage in his right knee. He was carried off on a stretcher after being fouled by Le Havre midfielder Amir Richardson in the first half of the match, which Lille won 1-0.

Lille stated that the tackle warranted a red card and has asked the league to refer the matter to its disciplinary committee. The club is also seeking clarification regarding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review conducted by the match officials.

In a statement, the club said: “Lille FC is exploring all possible legal avenues, reserving its right to take any necessary legal action to obtain compensation for its losses. We will support Tiago in any steps he decides to take to defend his rights.”

In response, Le Havre wished Santos a speedy recovery but emphasized that neither the match referee nor the assistant VAR official deemed the tackle worthy of punishment.

The club added in a statement: “In light of this, Le Havre questions Lille’s move to push the French Football Federation and the league to retroactively sanction its player, as such a decision would fall outside the scope of current regulations.”
