RJ Mitte, the young actor best known for his role as Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed television series “Breaking Bad,” died at the age of 34, his representatives told AFP on Monday.
The cause of death of the actor, who had cerebral palsy, was not immediately disclosed.
Mitte was still a teenager when he first appeared in “Breaking Bad” in 2008, portraying Walter White Jr., the son of chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin Walter White, a role that brought global fame to actor Bryan Cranston.
“RJ drew on his personal experience living with cerebral palsy, lending authenticity to his performance and enabling him to build a platform for raising awareness about disability issues and promoting inclusion,” Riley said.
He added, “He also served as president of the Mitte Foundation, supporting charitable efforts and community initiatives, leveraging his platform to challenge stereotypes and advocate for greater representation of people with disabilities.”
“Breaking Bad,” which ran for five seasons between 2008 and 2013, is among the most influential and critically acclaimed television series, and was named by The New York Times as the best TV series of the 21st century.
Colleagues from the show quickly paid tribute to him. Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, Walter’s criminal partner, said, “RJ, I love you, my friend. We will miss you,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader, Walter White Jr.’s uncle and a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration, said his “heart broke” upon hearing the news of the young actor’s death.
Norris wrote on social media, “Although RJ didn’t play my son on the TV show, I always made sure to look out for him and take care of him when he was a little kid on set.”
