Paris (AFP) – German player Alexander Zverev will end the current season at the top of the ATP rankings after Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz lost in the third round of the 1,000-point Shanghai Masters on Monday, the ATP announced.

Zverev was already certain of reaching number one due to the absence of current top-ranked Italian Jannik Sinner, who will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury. Sinner will lose the points he earned last year at the same tournaments.

Zverev’s position at the summit was confirmed at the end of the season following the ATP Finals in Turin, as Alcaraz, the world’s third-ranked player, fell significantly behind in points and could no longer overtake him after his defeat in Shanghai to Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.

The 29-year-old Zverev will officially become world number one for the first time in his career on November 2, after the Vienna tournament, following his first two Grand Slam titles this year at the French Open (Roland Garros) and the US Open.

Speaking to the ATP website, Zverev said: “It’s been a great season for me, with victories in Paris and New York, and knowing that I will finish the year at the top of the rankings is a dream that has become reality.”

Zverev remains in contention for the Shanghai title, where he will face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the round of 16.

Sinner, who will relinquish the top spot, had an exceptional finish to last year, winning the Vienna 500, the Paris Masters (1,000 points), and the Turin Finals, having defeated Zverev in all three events. His withdrawal from this year’s tournaments has cost him more than a quarter of his current points total.
