Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi affirmed on Sunday the importance of prioritizing dialogue and diplomatic means to resolve crises, giving priority to achieving peace and advancing development efforts, while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and refraining from interfering in their internal affairs.
According to a presidential statement, al-Sisi said on the occasion of the Egyptian-Indonesian summit held in Jakarta: “I extend my gratitude and appreciation to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for his hospitality and warm reception.”
He added, “We exchanged in-depth views on current regional and international developments, and agreed on the seriousness of the continued persistence of conflicts and disputes in many parts of the world, given that they pose a direct threat to regional and international security and stability.”
He continued, “The developments of the Palestinian issue took center stage, and our views converged on the necessary foundations and references required to achieve a comprehensive and just settlement of the Palestinian issue, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as this is the only path to achieving a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the region. I reiterate the necessity of ensuring full, safe, and sustainable access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and I firmly reject any attempts aimed at displacing the Palestinian people, liquidating their cause, or imposing demographic changes on Palestinian lands.”
He added, “We exchanged views on several other regional issues of mutual interest, foremost among them the situation in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. We emphasized the importance of supporting de-escalation efforts and reaching political settlements for various crises, as these are the only means to achieve lasting security and stability. We affirmed the existential importance of the Nile River issue to Egypt, as it is the lifeline of the Egyptian people, and reiterated Egypt’s firm commitment to its water rights and its categorical rejection of any unilateral measures that could harm its water security or diminish its historical and acquired rights.”
A joint statement addressed the situation in the Gulf region, where the Egyptian and Indonesian presidents expressed deep concern over the continued escalation and widening scope of hostilities, and the serious repercussions thereof on regional security and stability, the safety of civilians, freedom of navigation, energy security, and the global economy. They called for an immediate de-escalation and for all parties to exercise maximum restraint, and reaffirmed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, adhering to international law and the UN Charter, and resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.
Al-Sisi and his Indonesian counterpart witnessed the signing ceremony of several memoranda of understanding between the two countries.
