Pope to undergo surgery to remove lung tumor

The 71-year-old Pope said in his weekly address in St. Peter’s Square that doctors consider surgical intervention the most appropriate option, and based on their advice, he has decided to undergo surgery to remove a tumor in his lung.

He noted that the lung tumor was discovered during recent medical examinations and is “in a very early stage,” adding that it is “confined to a specific location.”

According to the Vatican spokesperson, the Pope will undergo the surgery in the first days of the week beginning on Monday, October 12, and his hospital stay is expected to last “about a week.”

The operation is scheduled to take place at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, which has treated popes since the time of John Paul II.
