Turkey Bans Social Media for Minors Under 15

Istanbul – AFP – Turkey banned the use of social media by individuals under the age of 15 on Monday, with the decision set to take effect on November 1.

This move brings Turkey in line with an increasing number of countries enacting legislation aimed at protecting children and adolescents from the harmful effects of digital platforms.

The decision was published in the state’s official gazette following the parliament’s approval of related legislation last April.

The decree stipulates that social media service providers are required to “take the necessary technical and administrative measures, including age verification,” to implement child and adolescent protection protocols.

Other countries, including Australia, have also imposed restrictions on children’s use of social media, while nations such as the United Kingdom and France are pursuing similar measures.

These initiatives aim to safeguard children from digital risks, such as screen addiction, sleep disorders, cyberbullying, and eating disorders.
