Sky News – Left-wing candidate Hitler Mussolini Simón Flores won the mayoral election in the remote Andean village of Quirupampa in Peru, according to the country’s National Office of Electoral Processes.
The newly elected mayor bears the names of Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler and Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini, two of Europe’s most prominent leaders during World War II in the last century.
Some families in South America, particularly in rural areas, are known for giving their children the names of historical figures such as Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao, often without adequate knowledge of these figures’ nature or ideologies.
Some residents also use the names of celebrities in the arts and sports to name their children.
The National Office of Electoral Processes in Peru stated that “Hitler,” a candidate from the left-wing “Ahora Nación” movement, received 229 votes, compared to 204 votes for his opponent Gaspar Osorio, a candidate from the far right, out of a total of 663 registered voters in the village.
Flores, a 45-year-old transportation company owner, will officially assume his duties as mayor of Quirupampa, located in the Huánuco region of northeastern Peru, starting on January 1, 2027.
