The volunteer team “We Plant and Protect” announced the resumption of its environmental initiative to replant mangrove trees for the second consecutive season, targeting the planting of 5,000 mangrove trees along the coasts of Kuwait, in support of the marine environment and to enhance biodiversity and coastal ecosystems.
Team leader Munif Salem Al-Duwaihi told “Al-Rai” that “the initiative is a continuation of the efforts undertaken by the team during the first season, which saw participation from various government entities and the private sector, including the Public Authority for Environmental Affairs, during which 5,000 mangrove trees were planted.”
Al-Duwaihi added that “as part of preparations for the second season, the team imported mangrove seeds from outside Kuwait in preparation for planting another 5,000 mangrove trees, reflecting its commitment to developing and sustaining the initiative and replanting this type of coastal vegetation to support the marine environment, enhance biodiversity, and preserve coastal ecosystems.”
He clarified that “mangrove trees are a crucial element in coastal ecosystems, as they provide natural habitats for many species, in addition to their role in supporting biodiversity and contributing to carbon sequestration and storage.” He emphasized that the initiative aims to strengthen the presence of these natural ecosystems along Kuwait’s coasts.
He noted that the “We Plant and Protect” initiative aligns with Kuwait Vision 2035 and its direction toward enhancing environmental sustainability and addressing climate challenges, pointing out that Kuwait emphasized during its participation in the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow in 2021 the importance of climate action and ecosystem protection as part of its efforts to fulfill its international climate commitments.
He said, “The team believes that young people are the driving force behind any sustainable environmental movement, and that involving them in environmental and volunteer initiatives helps translate environmental awareness into tangible field action and strengthens the culture of social responsibility toward the environment.”
