President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday allowing all U.S. citizens to use red-dyed diesel, a tax-exempt fuel typically reserved for agricultural machinery and other equipment used off public roads.
The move comes as high fuel prices, linked to the war with Iran, cast a shadow over the Republican Party weeks before the midterm elections.
Speaking at a large rally in Nebraska in front of supporters, Trump said the decision “will officially remove the requirement for off-road use and allow anyone to purchase tax-exempt red-dyed diesel for any purpose.”
The U.S. president acknowledged that he does not know much about this fuel, joking, “I don’t know what it is, but whatever it is, it’s supposed to be very good.”
Red-dyed diesel is the same fuel used in regular diesel, but it is exempt from highway fuel taxes.
A fact sheet released by the White House alongside Trump’s executive order attributed the price surge to the Russia-Ukraine war and a global shortage of refining capacity, without mentioning Iran.
It also blamed Democratic-led states for closing refineries in the name of green energy policies.
U.S. diesel prices have recently hit record highs, surpassing $6 per gallon, amid export restrictions imposed by Russia, a key supplier, following Ukrainian attacks on its oil facilities, further straining global markets.
