Washington, AFP – Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced the resignation of the state’s Department of Corrections commissioner following the botched execution of inmate Christa Pike, who survived two lethal injections.
In a statement received by media outlets, Lee said, “Tennessee Department of Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada has submitted his resignation and will leave his position this month,” without explicitly referencing the failed execution carried out early Wednesday morning against Christa Pike.
Lee, who on Thursday suspended executions in the state and ordered an independent investigation into the botched execution, added, “I am grateful to Commissioner Strada for placing the interests of Tennesseans first during this difficult period.”
Late Wednesday night, the Department of Corrections affirmed that it had fully adhered to the protocol adopted since the resumption of executions in the state in May 2025, following a three-year halt. The governor had then issued an order to suspend executions due to deficiencies in verifying the lethal injection solution used in the execution of another condemned prisoner.
According to documents filed by her lawyers on Friday with a Tennessee court, 50-year-old Christa Pike has been unconscious and connected to life-support equipment since the failed execution.
Randy Spivey, one of her attorneys, said, “After spending more than 20 years in solitary confinement and enduring a botched lethal injection execution, Christa is the person who has suffered the harshest punishment in the history of the death penalty in the United States.”
Governor Bill Lee, who on Monday refused to commute her sentence, had previously affirmed that he would not back down from carrying out her execution.
