Bayern Munich Settles Position on Firtz... Liverpool Clings to the Player

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a member of Bayern Munich’s supervisory board and the German football champions, clarified the club’s stance on the possibility of re-signing his compatriot Florian Wirtz, as Liverpool remains determined to keep the player despite his failure so far to meet expectations.
Liverpool signed Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for a base fee of £100 million, plus an additional £16 million in add-ons.
The German international’s move to the English Premier League followed a notable spell at Leverkusen, during which he helped the team win the Bundesliga title in 2024, raising expectations that he would quickly make his mark at Anfield.
However, Wirtz’s statistics since joining Liverpool have fallen short of expectations, with seven goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions.
Bayern Munich had been among the clubs interested in signing Wirtz before his transfer to Liverpool, but Rummenigge ruled out any current attempt by the club to bring him back.
In comments to the “Goal” website, Rummenigge said Wirtz’s move to Liverpool surprised him, noting that the player had been promised, according to information received by Bayern, the number 10 shirt he wore at Leverkusen.
Rummenigge explained that this factor was important in the player’s decision, adding that the financial differences between the options were not significant, and that Wirtz ultimately made his choice and opted for Liverpool.
Regarding the possibility of Bayern pursuing Wirtz in the future, Rummenigge pointed out that the club has several options in that position, including Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, and Moroccan international Ismaïla Sarr, and therefore sees no need to sign a fourth player at a high cost.
Meanwhile, Liverpool does not appear to be considering selling Wirtz at present, according to the “Team Talk” website.
According to the report, the 23-year-old remains part of Liverpool’s plans, with manager Andoni Iraola wanting to continue working with him and give him the necessary opportunities to regain his rhythm and showcase his abilities.
Liverpool’s current policy, the source said, is to continue developing Wirtz rather than contemplating an early departure, despite reported interest from Bayern Munich in signing him.
Thus, a return to the Bundesliga for Wirtz seems unlikely in the near term, as Liverpool remains committed to keeping him as part of its project, while Rummenigge has dismissed the need for Bayern to enter into a deal of such financial magnitude.
