"The Draw" Qualifies Oman to Gulf Cup 27 Semi-finals

The Omani national team advanced to the semifinals of the 27th Gulf Cup of Nations, “Khaleej Al-Arabi 27,” after a draw was held by the competitions committee of the Gulf Football Union at the InterContinental Hotel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which is hosting the tournament until October 6.

Following Oman’s 3-1 victory over Kuwait and Iraq’s 0-2 defeat by Saudi Arabia in the third and final matchday of Group A, both teams finished level on four points, with an identical goal difference of -1. They also tied on fair-play points, each receiving eight yellow cards.

This marks the first time in the history of the Gulf Cup that a draw has been used to determine which team advances to the semifinals. Previously, a draw was used in the 2002 Gulf Cup 15 in Riyadh, which was held in a league format, to decide the third-place finisher between Kuwait and Bahrain; on that occasion, the draw favored Kuwait (“the Blues”).

The Omani national team, which finished second in Group B, will await the outcome of the UAE-Qatar match on Wednesday to determine their semifinal opponent. The group winner will face the Saudi national team, who topped Group A.
