Hurricane Polo Hits Mexico

Mexico City – AFP – Hurricane Polo struck Mexico’s Pacific coast with winds reaching 175 kilometers per hour, flooding the streets of Puerto San Carlos and cutting off its power supply, amid warnings of life-threatening winds and flash floods.

The state of Baja California Sur is one of Mexico’s most hurricane-prone regions, but residents fear an especially severe season due to the El Niño phenomenon.

As the hurricane approached, winds intensified, whistling ominously as they signaled more violent gusts and bent palm trees, according to a France Press team in Puerto San Carlos.

Power was cut shortly afterward, leaving the town plunged into darkness as night fell.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center had warned of “potentially deadly winds and flash floods” in Baja California Sur, while authorities ordered residents to take shelter.

Puerto San Carlos is a fishing village of about 6,000 inhabitants, primarily dependent on whale-watching tourism.
