Jeddah (AFP) – The United Arab Emirates and Qatar are battling for top spot in Group 2 as they face each other tomorrow, Wednesday, in the final third round of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup (“Khaleej Al-Arabi 27”) in Jeddah, with both sides seeking to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Both teams have already qualified for the next round after winning their first two matches, accumulating six points each. The UAE leads on goal difference and needs only a draw to retain first place.

In the semi-finals, the winner of Group 2 will face the runner-up of Group 1, while the runner-up of Group 2 will play the winner of Group 1.

The UAE (“Al-Abyad”) will be without striker Yuri Cesar, who was injured and substituted at halftime in their match against Bahrain. However, they can rely on Guilherme Palla, a teammate of Cesar’s at Al Ahli, who made his international debut with a brilliant goal.

In addition to boasting the tournament’s best attack with seven goals, the UAE shares the best defensive record with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as all three teams have kept clean sheets so far.

The UAE has also achieved a notable feat, having faced zero shots on target in their matches against Yemen and Bahrain.

For their part, Qatar hopes to secure their third consecutive victory, but they are well aware of the difficulty of the task against their neighbor, especially after struggling to beat Yemen 1-0 in the second round.

Although both teams have already qualified, they have different motivations: the UAE seeks to confirm their top position, while Qatar aims to overturn the group standings and seize first place, making this one of the key clashes in the final group-stage round of Khaleej 27.

The two national teams have met 36 times overall, with Qatar winning 15 matches and the UAE 11, while nine matches ended in draws. Qatar has scored 51 goals compared to the UAE’s 46.

In Gulf Cup history, the two sides have faced each other 22 times, with Qatar winning nine matches (scoring 23 goals) and the UAE five (scoring 19 goals), with eight draws.

Meanwhile, defending champions Bahrain will face Yemen at the same time in a peripheral match after both teams were eliminated from contention with two consecutive losses.

Although the match no longer carries significance for qualification, both teams will seek an honorable victory to avoid finishing at the bottom of the table and to appease their angry fans.

Bahrain, who entered this edition as defending champions after winning the previous tournament in Kuwait, is going through highly complex technical and administrative circumstances, alongside a series of sharp media and public criticisms.
