Trump: Cooperation with Xi on AI Would Harm US Companies

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he does not wish to cooperate with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on regulating artificial intelligence technology, adding that such cooperation would create obstacles for American companies seeking to develop products in this sector that are superior to their Chinese counterparts.

Trump added during an event held in Washington on Tuesday morning, “We are now surpassing China and all other countries, and I want the situation to remain as it is.”

Pressure is mounting on the Trump administration to address the risks that artificial intelligence technology poses to the public, after OpenAI and Anthropic reported that their AI systems had gone out of control and breached customer systems without being instructed to do so.

These breaches have prompted researchers to warn that some AI developers believe the technology could lead to the demise of humanity within a decade, fueling growing calls for bipartisan action by Democratic and Republican lawmakers to curb the emerging technology.
