Immunity Lifted for Hungarian Prime Minister.. Over 'Phone Theft' Allegations

Hungary’s parliament lifted the immunity of Prime Minister Peter Magyar on Monday, following allegations that he stole a mobile phone.

The parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of the public prosecutor’s request to lift Magyar’s immunity. Magyar, who also holds a seat in parliament, saw the decision backed by 139 deputies, with no votes against or abstentions.

Magyar himself had requested the lifting of his immunity, affirming his willingness to cooperate with the investigation to clear his name of what he described as an “assassination of character.” He dismissed the case as a “farce” and accused his political opponents of attempting to target him politically.

The case dates back to 2024, when prosecutors accused Magyar of snatching a mobile phone from a man who was filming him inside a nightclub, before throwing the phone into the Danube River.

At the time, Magyar was a member of the European Parliament, which refused to lift his immunity. He later resigned from that position and became a deputy in the Hungarian parliament after his party, “Tisza,” secured a landslide victory in the legislative elections in April 2026.

Last week, Magyar stated that prosecutors were attempting to “confuse” his case with two financial corruption cases involving former ministers in the government of his predecessor, Viktor Orban, maintaining that what he is facing is a “political assassination of character” that has failed multiple times before.
