UEFA Nations League: Germany Suffers Shock Defeat to Greece

Germany stumbled again under new manager Jurgen Klopp with a shocking 1-0 home defeat to Greece, while Portugal returned from Norway with a second win under new coach Jorge Jesus, and the Netherlands secured their first victory under Spanish manager Chavi Hernandez on Sunday, the second day of the first stage of the UEFA Nations League.

In Group 2, after squandering a win against the Netherlands in their first match under Klopp by conceding a 1-1 equalizer in stoppage time instead of losing, Germany suffered a surprising home defeat to Greece, their first ever loss to the 2004 European champions in 11 meetings.

Germany’s tally remained at one point in the group, which was topped by Greece after they defeated host Serbia 2-1 in the opening round. The Netherlands finished second after the second round, having also beaten Serbia by the same scoreline.

In his first start, Mix Diskerup handed new Netherlands coach Chavi his first victory in his second match in charge of the “Oranje” by scoring a brace in a 2-1 win over Serbia in Belgrade.

Diskerup made his first start for the Netherlands national team after having previously come on as a substitute for Alkmaar striker in the 35th minute of the Germany match following an injury to Brian Brobbey.

In Group 4, Portugal returned from Norway with a second win under new manager Jorge Jesus, prevailing 2-1 despite Cristiano Ronaldo remaining on the bench.

Portugal and Norway entered the match having won their opening round fixtures against Wales (1-0) and Denmark (3-2) respectively, and the two teams faced each other on Sunday, with Wales emerging victorious at home 2-0.

Jesus’s side emerged victorious, inflicting Norway’s first home defeat since March 22, a 2-1 friendly loss to the Czech Republic, leaving Norway without a win against the “Seleção” of Europe since their sole victory in 12 meetings in September 2010 during the 2012 European Championship qualifiers.
