With two goals against the Iraqi national team, Kuwait’s outstanding striker Youssef Nasser set a new record in the history of the Gulf Cup, becoming the player with the longest time span between his first and last goal in the tournament’s history.
Sixteen years after his first Gulf Cup goal, which came against Qatar in the 2010 edition held in Yemen – a tournament that saw Kuwait crowned champions – Nasser broke the previous record of 14 years, previously held by Qatari player Mansour Muftah and Kuwaiti star Bader Al-Mutawa.
The 36-year-old veteran also equaled his former teammate Bader Al-Mutawa’s record for the most consecutive Gulf Cup editions in which he scored, with goals in six different editions.
Nasser’s tally in the Gulf Cup rose to nine goals, while his international goal count reached 60, three short of Jassem Al-Huwaidi, who sits second on the all-time list behind Bashar Abdullah, who leads with 75 goals.
