White House: Establishment of a "communication channel" between Washington and Beijing to address artificial intelligence incidents

The White House stated in a briefing document that the two countries have established a “U.S.-China dialogue on superintelligence to exchange views on the risks and benefits” associated with artificial intelligence, and have also agreed to set up a “bilateral communication channel” to address incidents in this field.

Artificial intelligence, which U.S. President Donald Trump has recently begun referring to as “superintelligence,” was a key topic discussed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart during Xi’s visit to Washington, which concluded on Friday.

The two rivals in the artificial intelligence sector face growing criticism over the risks posed by AI, following a number of incidents that have raised concerns about the technology escaping the control of its creators.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent proposed last week the establishment of a mutual notification mechanism between the two countries regarding any artificial intelligence incidents “related to national security.”

He added, “We believe it is essential to move from a state of ambiguity to greater transparency between the world’s first and second powers in the field of artificial intelligence.”
