Gordon: England should not copy Spain's style of play

London – Reuters – England winger Anthony Gordon believes the national football team should abandon its attempts to emulate Spain’s possession-based style of play and instead rely on its traditional approach, which places greater emphasis on physical strength.

Following England’s defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinal last July, the German manager of the English national team, Thomas Tuchel, faced intense criticism after stating that ball possession is “not part of their DNA” (referring to England players) as it is in Spain, where a style heavily reliant on passing is taught at all levels.

Gordon, 25, who moved from Newcastle United to Spain’s Barcelona last May, agreed with Tuchel, saying he was unsure whether English players could be coached in the same manner.

Speaking ahead of England’s match against Spain in the UEFA Nations League in London next Saturday, Gordon said: “Culturally, that tournament (the World Cup) or that match (against Argentina) was not the only time we have failed to control the game.”

He added: “As a nation, we do not possess the same strength the Spanish have, nor do we dominate matches the way they do. It is not in our nature. I am not sure it is something that can be taught. As I am now playing in Spain, I can speak with an informed perspective on how they retain possession of the ball.”

Gordon continued: “It is very different from what I have experienced in this country, so I am not sure we will ever reach that level. We can certainly improve, or perhaps take a different path and play according to our strengths, such as relying on physical performance, direct play, and counter-attacks.”
