BSK Students Engage in Dialogue on Peace and Diplomacy with the United Nations
On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, observed every year on September 21, the British School of Kuwait (BSK) hosted Ghada Al-Tahir, the Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator in Kuwait, and Dr. Bahareh Azizi, head of the “Young Ambassadors” program, in a dialogue with senior secondary students last Monday. The discussion addressed issues of peace, security, diplomacy, and the role of youth in these areas.
The meeting provided a space for direct discussion between the two guests and the students, starting from the concept of “sustainable peace” and what it means in a society like Kuwait, as well as the factors that contribute to its consolidation alongside the absence of conflict. It also examined the relationship between peace and development, equal opportunities, security, and stability.
The dialogue covered Kuwait’s experience in diplomacy and mediation, and the importance of dialogue in addressing disagreements and preventing their escalation. Students also discussed with the guests the role that youth can play in peace and security issues, and what their generation can contribute to discussions related to these matters.
This meeting is part of the British School of Kuwait’s approach to preparing senior secondary students for the stage following their school life, by providing them with opportunities to engage directly with experienced and specialized professionals, and to gain close familiarity with fields and issues that go beyond the limits of curricula and classrooms.
Through such meetings, the school also seeks to broaden students’ horizons and enhance their ability to engage in dialogue, ask questions, and discuss issues related to their future and the world around them, thereby helping them form their own perspectives and prepare for university and professional life.
The meeting was not limited to pre-prepared topics, as the floor was opened for senior secondary students to directly ask the two guests questions about peace, security, and diplomacy, and to build upon the issues raised during the dialogue.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on individual responsibility in building peace, and the steps that young people can take in their lives and surroundings to contribute to spreading a culture of dialogue, understanding, and positive engagement with differences.
